Job Description: 

The Director of Catechesis and Evangelization designs, organizes, directs, implements, and evaluates all parish religious education for children and adolescents, in adherence with the guidelines set forth by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the National Catholic Directory, the Diocese of Fresno, and Good Shepherd Catholic Parish.  Oversees the High School Confirmation in collaboration with the Youth Minister and Volunteers.

 

The Director of Catechesis and Evangelization works to promote and impart Catholic faith doctrine, building Church community, leadership, social responsibility, and development of a personal relationship with Jesus and His Church.

 

The Director of Catechesis and Evangelization should be a practicing Roman Catholic who views this position as a vocation.  He/she should have demonstrated skills in program development, education, communication and relationships, team building, and administrative management.  He/she should also have a good working knowledge of the seven main points of Catholic Social Teaching.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the development of the Parish Religious Education Program from Grade Level K through adult, in conformity with the guidelines of the Office for Formation and Evangelization of the Diocese of Fresno and Good Shepherd Catholic Parish.

  • Schedules faith formation opportunities for children, youth, adults, and families within the Religious Education Program calendar. This includes retreats and prayer services.

  • Provides access and inclusion for children with special learning needs.

  • Coordinates the initiation process for unbaptized children, teens, and adults and /or children, teens, and adults baptized validly in a non-Catholic Christian church. This is completed with the assistance and collaboration of the RCIA team and in accordance with the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.

  • Research and incorporate resources (AV, textbooks, liturgy materials, reference work, etc.) Which complements the religious education efforts in the parish. 

  • Ensures that the Safe Environment requirements, policies, and mandates for Parish Religious Education volunteers are complying with the Office for Child and Youth Protection for safe environment.

  • Obtains approval and support from the pastor, associate pastors, and parish Administrator for the general direction of the religious education of the parish.

  • Implements diocesan policies and procedures per the directives from the Office formation and evangelization.

  • Ensures that the Religious Education Program’s schedule of classes and activities are submitted to the pastor or his delegate for approval.

  • Updates and distributes Parish Religious Education Program handbook for catechists, students, and parents, annually.

  • Ensures the Religious Education Program’s schedule of classes and activities for catechists, students, and parents, annually.

  • Recruits, orients, evaluates, mentors, and provides ongoing training and spiritual development for the Parish Religious Education catechists.

  • Schedules publishes and Coordinates meetings with program information and spiritual development opportunities for the parents/guardians.

  • Oversees and manages budgets for all expenses related to the Parish Religious Education Programs.

  • Provide direction and guidance for the Vacation Bible School Team.

  • Manage Religious Education staff.  

  • Oversee the operation and maintenance of the data for Parish Data Systems-Faith Formation portion of Parish Soft.

  • Schedule and publish all sacraments dates & rehearsals.

  • This position necessitates frequent evening and weekend hours. 

  • Establish and maintain an annual budget.

    • A concern for the faith formation of the individual person, their families, and the evangelization of the entire parish.

    • An understanding of the diversity of spiritual strengths and weaknesses among individuals and a willingness to deal with all of them with consistency and charity.

  • Qualification and Education Requirements:

    • BA in relevant studies

    • Certified Catechist

    • Experience Serving in Ministry

  • Will occasionally enlist assistance in lifting larger objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
